He also served for the Subcommittee on the Structure and Properties of Commercial Polymers East Asia Research Meeting in the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) as a chairperson in 2014~2017.
Research
Through his research career, he has focused on the enhancement of interfacial interaction and applications of polymer blends and polymer based nanohybrid materials. In his early research, Ha worked on the miscibility and compatibilization of polymer blends and polymer nanocomposites as well as their structure-property relationship, while his research interests were expanded to the organic-inorganic nanohybrids, silsesquioxane based materials, and superhydrophobic coating materials. He has devoted to the development of colorless polyimides and/or low-dielectric constant polyimides and their hybrid materials for flexible displays. He has been also worked on the development of periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs) and their applications for drug delivery, environmental adsorption and flexible displays and so on.
As an Author
He wrote 20 scientific books. Apart from his activity as a polymer and materials scientist, he has worked also as an author and published 17 essay books in Korean. Three of his essay books titled “25 World Literatures that Touched My Mind”, and “An Engineering Professor Falls for Beethoven” and “An Engineering Professor Talks Convergence of Arts,” were selected as one of the Sejong Books in the field of liberal arts category in 2022 and 2025, respectively, by the Publication Industry Promotion Agency of Korea. Selected Sejong Books are purchased by the agency and distributed free of charge to libraries nationwide. After his official retirement from Pusan National University in 2021, Ha has been known as an engineering professor specializing in the Convergence of Arts by continuing public lectures and writing books on the subject. Moreover, he has had lectures for two semesters every year with the title as the “Hyowon Essay Academy” at the Future Citizen’s Education Center of Pusan National University since 2021.
Social Activity
Ha served as the president of the Busan Catholic Writers Association (2015~2016) and the Society of Busan Essay Writers(2021~2014). Ha also served for the Catholic Diocese of Busan as the President of the Council of the Laity Apostolate for the Catholic Diocese of Busan for four years from 2012 to 2016. He met Pope Francis when he visited Korea in 2014 for the beatification of the 124 Martyrs in Korea as one of 153 lay representatives.
